I think there is a manual update that you can install that updates the WU components allowing it to work. Personally I would just put linux on it as your not secure anyway. So go to Microsoft and manually download sp 3 and the latest Windows update. If it is very ancient like sp 2 them the certs won't work as they have expired with the signing compromised. If anyone knows how to get Windows Update working in XP and could help it would be much appreciated! I had the same problem on another computer as well. As it's a fresh install I don't understand why it won't work, and I've installed Internet Explorer 8 as well. When I open WU from the Start menu, it seems to attempt to open the correct link for Windows Update but then goes to a Microsoft Support page for "Windows Update does not start in Windows XP", yet the solutions there are no good. I understand that it's no longer supported by Microsoft, but Windows Update should still work. Hi! Don't ask why, but I have installed Windows XP on an old laptop (it won't run anything newer) and I would like to be able to install the updates that have been released for XP.
